Benita Johnson is a Sussex-based vocalist, guitarist and songwriter who has been playing live on the UK music scene for many years. Her music has been described as “not folk, not rock or pop – it’s Benita Johnson doing her thing and it’s beautiful” (Malcolm Carter, Pennyblack Music Reviews) and sits generally beneath the Alt-Country, Folk-Rock, Americana banners. Listeners cite similarities to Dido, Amanda Marshall, Texas and even Bessie Smith. She writes to unite, connect and de-mystify, delivering performances that mix it up from stomping audience participation to down-tempo folk / blues that will just grab at your heartstrings, with a few covers thrown in. “Her songwriting is top quality stuff … I’d be surprised if you’re not convinced you’re in the presence of an unsung genius” (David Kidman, NetRhythms Reviews).
